On Taking Good Care of You
Self-care has gotten a bad rap in some circles as of late, as it comes off as something that only the privileged can afford themselves. Treat yo self to shopping sprees, spa days, or taking a costly vacation/time off. In the real world however, many of these things are simply not accessible – due to time constraints, family or money. But there are a few things that we can do to take care of ourselves, even if there are things that are outside our control or grasp that limit us.
1. Just. Breathe.
Never underestimate the power of a good conscious breathing sesh. 4-7-8 breathing is one such technique. Another one I love is alternate nostril breathing. Both of these techniques can help quiet the nervous system.
2. Relaxxxxxx…
Marconi Union made a song to decrease anxiety that has SCIENCE behind it! They recommend not listening to it while driving. You’ve been warned. I may or may not be listening to it as I write this. Ahhhhhhhh.
3. Water.
More water. Then some more. Staying hydrated is so important and often overlooked. Being hydrated can also help bring high blood pressure down. Plant Nanny is a great apple app for tracking your water intake. How much should you be drinking? The answer varies.
4. Snoozefest!
Get enough sleep. Your body and brain needs that nightly recharge. Bedtime routines aren’t just for kids. Give yourself enough time to wind down prior to hitting the hay. Limit screens for at least 30 minutes before lying down. Write in a journal to help get some of the thoughts that keep you awake, out. If you aren’t much of a writer, there are “A Line a Day” journals out there that don’t put on the pressure of filling up an entire page. There are several other great tips for creating a bedtime routine.
5. Take a hike.
Or a walk. Walking has many benefits, as well. It relieves stress. It’s exercise. You are outside. Bonus points for getting out in nature for your walk. Extra bonus points for practicing mindful walking.
6. Be grateful.
One thing. Find one thing each day that you feel grateful for. It may seem silly, but it can help your emotional well-being to acknowledge and direct some thought and focus into what those things are that bring about that happy swell inside. I love the gratitude jar!
As we embark on a new week, I invite you to try one of these ideas and know that when you are actively engaging in whatever you have chosen for you, you are practising self care. Because you are so worth it. The only one that can truly take care of you is you.
And everything you need lies within you.
